Onyx

Onyx slab for architectural use is different from the commonly known black or banded onyx found generally as smaller rocks. Onyx
slab can be seen as a metamorphism of compact banded travertine, such as Multicolor Green Onyx and White Onyx from Pakistan. It has
a low absorption rate, high abrasion rate and will react to acidic properties. Because of its translucent nature, thin slabs of onyx
are popularly backlit in both horizontal and vertical applications. On the Mohs scale of hardness it ranks from a 3-4. As with
all natural stones, sealing is recommended, 3-4 times a year.
The use of onyx is generally more limited for interior use because of its softness and reaction to acidic properties which will etch
the surface if polished. It is not recommended for high traffic areas and is more appropriately seen as a vanity, fireplace surround,
tub decks, and showers.
One particular onyx, Nacarado from Brazil, does have greater strength and durability and has been used in high traffic areas and
kitchens.
